An early morning encounter with the Yellow-billed Malkoha in Sulawesi's Tangkoko National Park.

The forest was just waking up as we entered Tangkoko National Park in North Sulawesi. Like every birding morning, we walked slowly, stopping every few steps to listen and scan the trees. Every sound felt like a clue, every movement a possible new species.
 Then, a soft and unfamiliar call echoed through the canopy.
 Our guide stopped, looked up, and smiled. "Yellow-billed Malkoha."

 At first, we couldn't see it. The birds remained hidden among the dense green foliage, moving from tree to tree in a small group. Their long tails flashed briefly between the branches before disappearing again. It became less about spotting the bird and more about following its calls through the forest.

After several minutes of patient waiting, one finally perched on an open branch. The moment was worth every bit of anticipation. Its rich chestnut plumage, glossy dark wings, remarkably long tail, and vivid yellow-and-red bill made it one of the most striking birds I encountered in Sulawesi.


Soon another bird appeared nearby, quietly feeding on fruits before rejoining the rest of the group deeper inside the rainforest.
 What made this encounter memorable wasn't just the bird's beauty—it was the way it revealed itself. The Yellow-billed Malkoha never offered an easy photograph. Every frame had to be earned. The first image was simply a glimpse through the foliage, the next revealed its graceful silhouette, and finally, a close portrait captured its vibrant colours and expressive eye.
 As wildlife photographers, we often hope for perfect light, unobstructed views, and ideal poses. But the rainforest tells its own stories. Sometimes it asks you to slow down, listen carefully, and appreciate the pursuit as much as the final photograph.

 For me, the Yellow-billed Malkoha will always be remembered not as the first bird I saw that morning, but as the first bird I heard. In a forest full of life, its gentle calls led us to one of the most memorable wildlife encounters of our journey.
