In a lagoon in the southernmost island of the Lakshadweep archipelago, a blenny poses for the camera on a coral boulder. These tiny, bottom-dwelling fishes that reproduce in abundance are essential to the functioning of coral reef ecosystems.

Shreya Yadav has a PhD in marine biology from the University of Hawai‘i, Manoa. She studies coral but has a special fondness for shy invertebrates, small fish, and cryptic animals that hide in shells and holes.
