As with most sanctuaries and national parks around the country, Kabini too was once a private hunting ground for the maharajas. Later, it became a shikar hotspot for British viceroys too. Today, after decades of successful park management, it isn’t uncommon to tread down a jungle path and see a leopard, a tiger or even a black panther walking along the road ahead.

The banks along the backwaters of Kabini are fabulous grazing grounds for large herds of elephants, gaurs and other herbivores. The surrounding tourism zone is lush and densely wooded, and manmade waterholes and salt licks allow wildlife to flourish through the year. A safari in this forest can be an enchanting experience.
