I got hooked to the allure of the mangrove ecosystem when I encountered it for the very first time in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Most of my initial visit to the islands was spent learning the importance of the ecosystem and understanding the processes, functions and mechanics of this space; followed by capturing footage and translating it into a film.

But the times I walked or waded through the mangroves simply to absorb its essence are the most memorable — the colours, textures, smell, sounds and movement; the play of light that was a feast for the eyes. Like a staged production at daytime.

Wading through the mangroves at night with a torchlight to see what lurked there was both magical and eerie. The light created impressions of the fish that moved in the waters around my feet and disappeared quickly. Only the plants, still and lit by the moon, were seen clearly.
